If we’re being honest, every day is Bread Day for us – it’s our first love and we’ve been baking it on the daily for almost 25 years.
But we’re especially enthusiastic about raising a crust on 16 October, known to those in (and out of) the biz as World Bread Day. Swing by your favourite The Grumpy Baker location to indulge in your most cherished sourdough selection, as we pay homage to this humble staple.
We’ve been baking bread using traditional methods and recipes passed down through generations, every day since our head baker Michael Cthurmer opened the first shop on Oxford Street, Paddington back in 2002.
Defying machine automation, each loaf is naturally fermented from starter, individually shaped by hand, and baked on-site across all of our locations, fresh every day. Our artisanal sourdough range is preservative- and additive-free.
Pick yourself up a loaf, including bestsellers like the Fig & Walnut Sourdough and Soy Linseed Sourdough, plus fan favourites such as Roast Garlic & Olive Sourdough, Potato Rosemary Sourdough, and Black Russian Rye Sourdough (a denser, darker and tangier loaf than regular rye), as well as light and airy Jerusalem Bagels and fluffy, sweet Challah.
Or enjoy our bread featured in dishes on our cafe menus, like schnitzel in challah, smoked salmon Jerusalem bagel, and black dukkah avo on our sourdough toast.
We also bake moreish muffins, pies worth crossing town for, and spinach and feta bourekas, among many other sweets and savouries.
